words

the words you say to me —

those are words you use for a drunken bum

reaching for your wallet

those are words you use for a man

advancing on your wife

and “i’m sorry” —

that’s what you say to the elderly lady

you cut in line at the grocery store

that’s what you say to the bald man

behind you as the door swings shut

those words are not for your daughter;

she’s delicate.

those words are not for your son;

he’s impressionable.

those words are not for your wife;

she’s loyal.

and you can just float away

on a cloud of smoke —

the world is easier that way

but me.

i’m stuck

trying to forget the pain

of my bruised heart,

strangled at your hand.

i’ll lick my wounds quietly
